Indian Nationals Travelling to Bhutan

Indian nationals wishing to visit Bhutan may please carry either (a) Passport having validity of minimum 6 months; or (b) Voter Identity Card, issued by the Election Commission of India.

Indian nationals having their passports or voter IDs may directly approach Regional Immigration Office, Royal Govt. of Bhutan, Phuentsholing to obtain entry permits for visiting Thimphu and Paro in Bhutan.  No fee is charged by Royal Govt. of Bhutan for issuing entry permits.

No entry permit is required for Indian nationals for entering Phuentsholing City.  The Phuentsholing border gate normally remains open from 6 am to 8 pm.

Indian nationals not carrying either a valid passport or voter ID cards may please contact Consulate General of India, Phuentsholing and apply for Identification Slip.  The details are at Consular Services – Identification Slip Link at this website.

The Identification Slips issued by Consulate General of India, Phuentsholing may be presented to Regional Immigration Office, Royal Government of Bhutan, Phuentsholing for obtaining entry permits for visiting Thimphu and Paro in Bhutan.

However, tourists desirous of going beyond Thimphu and Paro need to acquire a ‘special area permit’ from the Royal Govt. of Bhutan Immigration Office at Thimphu on any working days (Monday to Friday).

Special Advisory

Indian nationals traveling to Bhutan are advised not to bring Indian currency notes of the denominations of Rs. 500/- and Rs. 1000/- to Bhutan.  However, Indian currency notes of Rs. 100/- and below are accepted in Bhutan.

Mandatory documents : Carry original Election  card / passport  and  for children  between  8 to 18th yrs  birth certificate , school identity card and college identity card and , two xerox copies each documents and four pass port size photo
